PIN/PIN2/PUK/PUK2 Codes

1. The phone is requesting a PIN/PIN2/PUK/PUK2 code.
Your phone is equipped with one or more codes to protect it against unauthorized use. The PIN and PUK codes actually protect the SIM card, a small card inside your phone that establishes the network connection.

In most cases, your operator or service provider is the best source of assistance with PIN and PUK codes.

  • The most common code is the PIN (Personal Identification Number) code, which you set yourself and can activate and inactivate by following the instructions in your user guide.
  • The PIN2 code is a PIN code which acts as a second layer of protection for certain features of your phone. It functions in the same way as the PIN code, and more information is available in your user guide.
  • If the PIN code is entered incorrectly multiple times, your phone may request a PUK (Personal Unblocking Key) code. The PUK code is an 8-digit code provided by your operator or service provider.
  • If the PIN2 code is entered incorrectly multiple times, your phone may request a PUK2 code.

Please contact your operator or service provider for assistance with your PIN and/or PUK codes. If you have already contacted your service provider and the code provided did not work, you will have to obtain a new SIM card from your operator or service provider.

2. The phone is requesting a security code.
Your phone is equipped with one or more codes to protect it against unauthorized use. Please note that the security code, which protects the phone itself, differs from the PIN code, which protects the SIM card.

If your phone is prompting you for a security code and you have not activated one, please try the following:

  • Enter the default security code: 12345. Only try this once.

If your phone still requests a security code, please bring it to the nearest Nokia service center for inspection.

Please note:

  • Some operators configure phones so that they only work with their brands’ SIM cards. In this case, if you enter the wrong code three or more consecutive times, the phone may lock permanently. If this happens, contact your operator or service provider for assistance.
  • In other cases when you enter the wrong code three or more consecutive times, the phone switches to a “sleep mode” and does not accept any entries for the next 15 minutes. In this case, power the phone off, then back on, let it sit idle or untouched for 15 minutes, then try again or bring it to a Nokia service center.

3. The phone displays “SIM card rejected” or “SIM card unaccepted”.

  • The SIM card is out of alignment. If the phone has recently been dropped, bumped, or opened, the SIM card may need adjusting. Follow the SIM card installation instructions in your user guide.
  • The PUK (Personal Unblocking Key) code is entered incorrectly multiple times. This can inactivate the SIM card. If inactivation appears to be permanent, contact your operator or service provider for a new SIM card.
  • You have recently changed service providers. In this case, either your SIM card or your phone may be configured for your previous operator and may require reconfiguring. It may also be that your phone is configured so that it cannot be used with a SIM card from a different operator or service provider.

Setup

When I received my 6270 it was not configured for email, web access, or anything else for that matter. After spending way to much time trying to figure it out, I managed to get everything working, such as web access, Opera Mini, MidpSSH, Google Local, email, and other applications. I initially sent a configuration text message from the Nokia site, which only worked half way. Do not try that method if you are using Cingular, I don’t know if it will work for other providers. Here are the steps that I took to configure the phone.

These are the steps I took to get my Nokia 6270 working with Cingular in the USA

Step 1.

  1. Go to “Menu –> Settings –> Configuration –> Personal config. Settings”
  2. Choose “Options”
  3. Choose “Add New”
  4. Choose “Access Point”
  5. For “Account Name”, use whatever you would like to call this Access Point, I used “Cingular access point”. Accept the name
  6. Choose “Access point settings”
  7. For “Data Bearer”, choose “Packet Data”
  8. Choose “Bearer settings”
  9. For “Packet data access point” type “wap.cingular”
  10. For “Authentication type” choose “Secure”
  11. For “User name” use “WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM” (in all caps)
  12. For “Password” use “CINGULAR1″ (in all caps)
  13. Choose “Back”
  14. Choose “Back”
  15. Choose “Back”
  16. Choose “Back”
  17. At the “Configuration settings” screen, choose “Preferred access point”
  18. Select the access point you just created
  19. Choose “Personal config. settings”
  20. Choose “Options”
  21. Choose “Add New”
  22. Choose “Web”
  23. For “Account Name”, name it anything you want, I used “My web”
  24. For “Homepage” use whatever page you want, I use “www.wallyx.com/m”
  25. For “User name” use “WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM” (in all caps)
  26. For “Password” use “CINGULAR1″ (in all caps)
  27. For “Use preferred access pt.” choose “Yes”
  28. Choose “Back”
  29. Choose “Options”
  30. Choose “Add New”
  31. Choose “Streaming”
  32. For “Account name” use whatever you want, I used “My streaming”
  33. For “UDP port range, I use “6970-7170″
  34. For “Use preferred access pt.” choose “Yes”
  35. Choose “Back”
  36. Choose “Back”
  37. Choose “Activ. Default in all apps.” And click “Yes”
  38. For “Default config. settings” choose “Personal configuration” and accept it

Step 2.: You might need to do the following:

  1. From the main menu, go to “Web”
  2. Choose “Settings”
  3. Choose “Configuration settings”
  4. Choose “Configuration”
  5. Choose “Personal configuration”
  6. For Account, use the web you created in the previous steps, I am using “My web”

Now try to connect to the web and run internet applications, GOOD LUCK!

I am not sure why you would have that problem. I doubt that is something you or I could fix. Maybe just wait until the new firmware is released and try that. You can maybe also try to get a replacement from Nokia. Good luck!

Hello George. From what i read, if you are in the US, and using the current firmware of V 03.53 15-11-05, it is not possible to get rid of the voice mail icon due to compatibility issues between European and US carriers. Since it is a European phone, and you are using it in the US (i am assuming), then you will not be able to get rid of it. Lets just hope it is fixed in a future firmware upgrade.

Hey Ron,

I can’t connect to the web. I configured my 6270 as you’ve described and did the additional “web” settings mentioned in “step 2″, but when i goto connect to the web by pressing and holding the “0″ key, i get the following response:

“Subscribe to packet data first”

Any idea why?

Thanks!

Hello Alex, I used to get that message also. You should try deleting all of the settings and redoing it, or make sure you have activated the settings that you created. Other than that, i am not sure what else you could do.

Ron,

What if you go: menu-> settings ->connectivity-> packet data-> packet data settings

Anything to config there that may help?

One thing I forgot to mention in my previous post is: after the “subscribe to packet data first” error appears, it then says, “link not found”. Does that tell you anything?

Thanks,

Alex

I see you have conf. for Cingular email…what about T-Mobile? Everything works great on my 6270 except my email is not working. I also had a problem with my screen turning black and restarting. I live in Florida and Nokia US referrs my to Nokia UK and Nokia UK referrs me to Nokia US…isn’t that funny. s

Sigi, I do not know the configuration options for Tmobile. Yes, I was also bounced around between Nokia USA, Nokia Europe, and Cingular. You should call Tmobile and ask them for the configuration settings. You should still be able to follow my directions, but with your settings.

As it turns out, although I’m on the Cingular network I’m a legacy client from AT&T wireless. So the problems I’m having may be due to my SIM not being a Cingular SIM. I’m going to officially switch over and I suspect that should take care of all the issues minus the VM icon. Any idea on a possible firmware update?

It’s official- I now have a Cingular SIM and your settings work perfectly. When I first put the new SIM in, it cleared the VM icon- cool!- but later, i called the phone and left myself a voicemail and sure enough, the VM icon is back even though I’ve erased my voicemails. Oh well, c’est la vie!

I spoke too soon. I’m having trouble sending an MMS. Do the settings above allow for it? If not, do you have the settings for MMS? I’d like to send a picture message, but can’t at the moment. I keep getting the error “invalid MMS settings”. LOL.

i bought a nokia 6270 today and as i was trying to browse thru the phone, one thing ive noticed is that the back light would just turn itself off intermittently. it doenst really hang the back light just goes out.
i tried configuring things on the display options bu turning off the power saving whatever and the “lights” to ON but still no good.
i would always have to slide the phone open or close to get the light back.
is this a bug that can be fixed by a firmwafe upgrade?
im really worried and i feel so ripped off. :(

i used all your settings for the streaming but what is there to stream? i’m on the t-mobile network. thanks.

i think your page is really hopeful.

btw about the voicemail problem. when i stick my old t-mobile sim card in there, it’s about 11 months old, i get the voicemail icon all the time but when i put in my new one, i got last week, it doesn’t show at all! phantom messages with both sim cards! - monica

Monica, I was unable to have my phone use apps such as opera and google local until I enabled the streaming, but I am using Cingular, I do not know if it is needed for tmobile.

Yeah, you will get all of your voicemails, you just will not get the correct notification. For my phone, it claims that I always have voicemail, even after I check and delete them. Its not a big problem, its just that the phone is not 100% compatible with the US networks. I am hoping a firmware upgrade in the future will fix this.

Wow, I don’t know how many times I tried making these changes before it finally worked. Having tried to configure the phone myself, I thought I knew the menus and settings well enough to just read the instructions once over then do it from memory.

After many failures, I finally sat down in front of the screen, and followed the instructions TO THE LETTER before it finally worked. I have no idea what I was doing wrong before.

Anyway, thank you for posting this. It has finally made my Nokia 7370 useful here in the states on Cingular. Note that the Nokia 7370 is running the same Series 40 3rd Edition as the 6270.

Ronnie,
Seems like this dialog has been going on for a while. I just got the 6270 and (most) everything works fine, though I haven’t tried MMS features, except VMI.

I am on T-Mobile network and was on the phone with customer service, technical support, business support etc for more than 1 hour last night but they were no use. They “tried” to be helpful, but it was a waste of time calling them.

I have a newer version of the firmware, V 03.65 19-12-05 but the VMI still does not work. I get a blank system text message.
Ideas anyone?

to all the people w/ Cingular and the annoying voicemail icon - live with it. it’s because of the different operating systems. Our phone is only geared for the UK/Europe market at this time… Just check to see if you “missed a call” by pressing the 4way nav button downward to see if “1 missed call”…

don’t try to remove it, it won’t work… trust me…

@Chad,

Not absolutely sure by your post alone, but my missed calls pop up on my phone. That icon is still there, but I dont see what the big deal is. I see everyone complain, but I dont understand it. The reason is, after a message is left, the phone will notify you. So just check the message then. If you go a few days without checking messages, you should know if you have had some messages or not, just check and see. I understand the complaint, but it seems overblown. I’m sure a firmware upgrade will take care of this eventually.

My phone is about a week old now. Its one of the brown ones from Germany which I understand to be the better batch. I’ll keep all probs posted. I have had one or two freezes. But that was when I was in the mem card and switching pictures heavily. It might not have even frozen. It was probably just searching the card and I needed to be patient, but I restarted it instead. But I’ll count it as a freeze because it indeed could have been a freeze.

Also another observation. I read reviews for this phone and a lot of them I might add, before I bought this phone. I’m in the U.S. and so thats all I had to go on. Just about everyone of the reviews said something along the lines of the picture quality is good but could be better or that the video quality is bad. I figured this to be the case when I got the phone. But I played around with it and found a quality setting. Low Medium and High. I put video to high and it was way better than the video from reviewrs at Mobile-Review.com. I did a comparison and it seems that the video they did was at medium quality. My high quality settings blew their video out the water. My picture quality was great at medium, but setting it to high made it even better. I guess they botched that review.

Hi to all,

I just brought my 6270 back from Hong Kong 2 weeks ago w/o any problem like freezing or powering off by itself, except I’m not getting VM notification n d VMI icon never come on or stay on! Mine has V03.65 19-12-05 RM56 firmware which is d newer 1. Called Cingular w/o solution. Called NOKIA USA n they flat out told me there is nothing they can do since the phone isn’t intended for the US market, what an sttitude!!! I found out d best way 2 bandage this problem 4 d time being until d day when a new firmware comes about is 2 change ur VM greeting when u set up ur VM. Tell people who call u 2 selet sending a call back # b4 they leave a voice message. D system (Cingular or former AT&T) will send u a sms with a call back # n u’ll know u have a VM. Hope this help! Someone please post the updated firmware ASAP when one is avaliable. Thanks.

I bought my 6270 in HK 4 $410 USD which came w/ more goodies than if u bought it in US. It came with: FM stereo headset, desktop charger (w/ an FM Ant. so u can listen to FM w/o headset while phone is charging), USB cable that connects d desktop charger 2 ur PC, wall charger, CD ROM w/ bonus software, 512mb mini SD, extra batt., leather carrying case, screen protector, 3.5mm charging adapter, owner’s manual, n all these r original NOKIA products. From past experiances buying phones in US, I would b lucky if all I get is d phone, charger, cheap earpiece n d owner’s manual.

I shopped many stores in HK and found that the same phone model were made in Germany, China, Malaysia, etc. I found no significant quality differences. As far as settings on d phone goes, we all have 2 thank our US Carriers. In the case in HK & China, settings for each Carrier is preprogramed in their own SIM cards. All I have to do when I switch Carrier is go 2 SIM application n apply d settings. Took me 30 sec., end of story. Trust me, I switch sims w/ a number of friends there n it worked like a champ. Can u imagine what would happen if the regular phone companies do what the cell carriers do on our home phones? Hmm… may b we need to start a movement of some sort towards the cell carriers or something. Anyone has any ideas?

Sorry about so long winded but just my 2 cents!

Does anyone know if Flash Lite 1.1 and/or 2.0 will work on the 6270? It’s a deciding factor on whether or not I purchase the handset.

@ Kris,
Yes, I too have learned to live with the VM icon. I have the misty-blue phone and also bought one for my wife. We love it. We’re in Hawaii, and with other phones, the reception is very poor where we live. This phone rocks - BEST reception. You know it’s the phone cause we had the same network (Cingular) w/ all of the other phones also…
For those of you who are in the US and follow wally’s directions to the “T”, it works… Double check your accuracy cause I’ve done it for 2 of my phones w/ no hitch.
The only thing I wish is for the PTT to be active, but cingular uses a different “system” from the one that the 6270 uses.. And expect no help from anyone as “this phone isn’t meant for the US market”… hahaha.
Peace everyone.

Hi, I’ve had a Nokia 6280 for the past month or so and really enjoy it. I was just wondering if the settings would be the same since they are almost the same phone. Plus I use T-Mobile. Thanks.

All good, except I dont understand how to login into my instant messenger. My sony s710a already has the yahoo, icq, aim, and some other one already built into the phone by default, which is really sweet. How do I login into the 6270s instant messenger. It asks for a login…username-password ect… and tells me to check my messenger settings whenever I try to login..dunno anyone:))

thx

by the way what do you guys use to cover your 6270 phone? I use the Ipod nano sock only $29 bucks for 3 pairs of socks.. protects the camera
lens and the phone from scratches and lint and dust from your pocket..

Do you know if Mini Opera will work with T-Mobile?

I’ve read that it won’t work if you have just T-Mobileweb - you need to subscribe to an Internet plan.

I’ve also read that it will work with T-Mobileweb, so I have no clue whats going on.

Any ideas?

For all you people with a Nokia 6270 using Cingular copy this link to your browser to enable your MMS and Web browser settings: http://www.europe.nokia.com/nokia/0,,71993,00.html
Nokia will send you the setting free of charge and all you have to do is accept the settings. It worked for me anyway.
As for the VM icon i’ve learned to live with it. I have tried the “leave yourself a message and erase it” but the phone will not recognize the message the company sends to remove your icon. I’ve also tried a new SIM card which Cingular will provide free of charge but that did not help either. You should be able to at least see a message of “missed call” to be notified you may have an email. I believe I’ll have to wait for a phone firmware update to resolve this issue.
Also, I cannot find any advice on the net for setting up PTT. The Cingular associate couldn’t figure it out either.
